Dams for livestock, house water or irrigation are a major feature of the Australian farming landscape. Many dams are no more than a blocked gully to catch the natural run off. Older dams, like the one I modeled this painting on, often have trees shading them and show signs of having been completely dry in previous seasons with little hummocks and islands of mud indicating past low waterlines. There’s always something special about coming across a dam secluded in a little bit of bush. A safe place and a welcome sight in heat of summer.
